Sub-limit

A sub-limit is a lower limit within a policy that applies to a specific category of item or loss. For example, a contents policy with a £50,000 overall limit may have a £2,000 sub-limit for jewellery. Only £2,000 would be paid for a jewellery claim even though the main limit is much higher. Also called an inner limit or specified limit.

Common sub-limits to check

Sub-limits commonly appear for: high-value jewellery and watches, cash kept at home, business equipment, bicycles, portable electronics, and art. Items above the sub-limit must be specifically listed (specified) to be fully covered. If your jewellery or watches exceed the sub-limit, contact your insurer to add them as specified items.
