About InsuranceTheGuide
Neutral, plain-language guidance on insurance — for everyone.
Insurance affects almost every part of life, yet most of what is written about it is written to sell. We exist to explain: how cover works, what it costs in practice, what policies exclude, and what to do when you need to claim.
We do not sell insurance, recommend insurers or collect your personal details. Our only aim is that you understand your cover before you need it.
Our mission
To help people understand insurance clearly and calmly, so that every decision about cover is an informed one.
Policies are long and technical, and the parts that matter most — exclusions, conditions and limits — are the parts least often read. Many people compare cover on the monthly price alone and only discover what it really costs when they make a claim.
InsuranceTheGuide brings the explanation, the arithmetic and the vocabulary together in one neutral place. The library grows page by page, and every page is written to be read by anyone, whatever their experience.

How we write
Our editorial principles
Five commitments to every page we publish. If you find a page that falls short of them, please let us know.
Explain, never sell
We describe how cover works and the questions to ask. We do not name, rank or recommend insurers or policies.
Name the source and region
Access differ by country. Every country-specific fact says where it applies and where it comes from.
No invented figures or examples
We show your own numbers, or figures from a named official source. Worked examples are always labelled as examples.
Reviewed by qualified people
Each page is checked by a reviewer with insurance experience before it is published.
Kept current
Every page shows the date it was last reviewed. Pages past their review date are marked as under review.
How a page is made
Each guide passes through the same five steps before it reaches you, and returns to the start when it is due for review.

We never tell you which insurer or policy to choose.
No paid placement
No company can pay to appear in, or change, our guidance.
No personal data collected
Figures you enter in our tools stay in your browser.
No quotes or sales
We do not arrange cover or pass your details to anyone.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
- No. We do not sell, arrange or recommend insurance, and we receive no commission or payment from insurers. Our role is solely to explain how cover works. The FCA financial promotions rules and the NAIC consumer information standards inform our approach.
- No — we explain how policies work so you can compare them, but we cannot and do not make personal recommendations. For regulated advice, speak to a licensed insurance adviser. In the UK, find a regulated adviser via the FCA Financial Services Register. In the US, use the NAIC consumer portal.
- General explanations of how insurance works apply worldwide. Country-specific rules, minimum limits and complaint routes are in labelled region boxes with a named source. Key sources include the FCA (UK), NAIC (US), APRA (Australia) and OSFI (Canada).
- Nothing leaves your device. All calculations run in your browser. We collect no personal data from tool use. This design follows the data-minimisation principle in the GDPR (Article 5) and the FTC privacy principles.
- Use the "Report a problem with this page" link at the bottom of any content page, or email us via the footer. We treat every report seriously — correction notices are added to the relevant page.
